Switch Gear

How our Midstream client improved Switch Gear reliability and operational efficiency at several compression sites. In addition to Arc flash safety risk reduction (HSE), the sites have reduced unscheduled maintenance and outages.

Our client is a North American Energy provider of natural gas, crude oil and power facilities across North America highlighted with a natural gas pipeline system of 90,000+ kms which transports more than 25% of North American natural gas demand.

Client Challenge

  • HSE Risk / Reducing the number of unplanned site visits and reduction in safety risks while at site are paramount, this is specifically concerning during high production winter months.
  • Aging or Obsolescent Switch Gear Motor Control Centre (MCC) Equipment is common in most remote Compressor field locations, additional maintenance and attention is required. OPEX is impacted.
  • Obsolete Electrical Equipment components will typically experience problems with Mechanical Interlocks, Finger Clusters and move away from Molded Case Breakers and replace with Power Breakers which are easier to rack out and maintain.

Client Solution

  • Complete overall system facility audit including cabling health, grounding calculations and peripheral equipment.
  • Ensure design parameters are identified including latest codes for Switch Gear and Motor Control Centres (MCC).
  • Supplied planning, engineering, drafting, and commissioning documentation to facilitate the facility modernization.
  • Design new engineered Switch Gear and Motor Control Centre (MCC) system based off facility audit and findings that includes (but not limited to) the following considerations: operability, maintenance, environmental impact, life cycle costs and future opportunity for remote diagnostics.

Client Benefits

  • Most wiring and motors in the field can be re-used if modernization is completed before failure (95 – 97% of the time, only the Switch Gear and MCC needs replacement).
  • Sustained system reliability decreases call outs and reduces outage time improving profitability.
  • Decrease in operational life cycle costs with energy efficient equipment.
  • Continued protection of existing equipment and personnel.
